What customers say?

“ I’m very unsure why people that have nothing nice to say feel it’s okay to broadcast it on a site where it will forever remain. I read all of the reviews prior to driving all the way from the Benicia area for injera and some spices. Despite the reviews, I always try new places. I am aware that everyone is entitled to leaving whatever comments they’d like. My experience will be my own. This place is very neat, clean, organized, and you are pleasantly greeted upon entry by an Ethiopian woman usually. Beautiful energy. I’m not in anyway offended by the language barrier when I am purchasing popular goods from another country that you can only buy in small businesses like this one. I mean what do you expect? Maybe we should learn the language of the people we are buying from. I’m just saying. Pricing for everything in this place is amazing and so is the injera! I mean it’s like it came from the kitchen of an Auntie or Grandmother that made it with so much perfection and love! I bought a beautiful hand woven basket for serving, spices, red lentils, and about 30 pieces of injera. I will be driving back to this place as often as possible. There’s even an Ethiopian bakery directly across the street! WHAT! If your planning on hosting and serving this style cuisine then you have scored big to come across this gem. I’m hooked as long as they’re open and no, I was not asked or paid to write this review. Just disappointed that anyone would have anything bad to say about an ethnic place trying to strive to stay in business like anyone else! Cheers! To many more years of good service! ”

“ Great shop with great prices. Helpful service and fresh injera (though the injera line can be long on the weekend, so come early!) ”

“ Very sweet auntie helped me around the store. Come early if you want the fresh injera! ”

“ For a shop it’s size the selection is found wanting. Could do more on delivering to customers as well. Overall, a great place to shop many things Ethiopian. ”

“ I love coming here. It's clean and the ladies are nice each time I see one of them. I like to buy my kolo and injera here it is fresher than other places. We are lucky there are many other markets between Oakland and Berkeley so to each their own. We need African businesses to stay open and thrive. Thus place is amazing and honestly so are most of the Ethiopians businesses and restaurants ”

“ I want to try making ethiopian food at home so I went here to get ingredients and they were super helpful and friendly. They even gave me advice for how to use certain items and to keep the niter kibbeh good. ”

“ Abyssinia Market is one of the first injera stores in Oakland-San Francisco Bay Area that features a special brown teff and barley mixture. Loved & popular for the past ten plus years, making it a staple in the community, their injera doesn’t bloat the stomach and has the realest taste and ingredients in comparison to most injera I’ve tried in the whole area. I assure you this injera tops the list as best in quality & taste how it digests and most like the injera back in Ethiopia/Eritrea. The best! And the owner is a sweetheart I love Abyssinia! Do not be mislead other stores injera have not been around as long and don’t emphasis on taste and ingredients. They either short hand you on authenticity or ingredient and taste. My favorite injera Tadu’s Kitchen features their injera also please request it ”
